Name: Leroy (although she’s a girl!)
Age: 3.5
Rehoming fee: $100
Location: Denver
Vaccinations: all up to date!
Spayed/neutered/chipped: yes
Breed: husky/golden retriever/ malamute/other (I have the DNA panel)
It is with a very heavy heart that I write this rehoming post. I need to start the process of finding a new home for my beloved 3.5-year old New Mexican mutt. In May of 2020, I took in a mama dog and her 9 1.5 week old puppies as a temporary foster. I cared for this litter and mama day and night for 8+ weeks. It was a challenging but beautiful experience. I had no intention of foster-failing (adopting) one of the puppies but I fell in love with this little and gorgeous brown dog. She was smart and confident and cuddly right from the beginning. We jokingly named her Leroy, after the Jim Croce song “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” even thought she wasn’t bad, she was just smart and playful!
Leroy has been on several cross-country road trips with me and lots of hikes & camping trips. She’s a wonderful companion and is so adaptable and EASY in terms of being in the car or a tent or whatever.
Leroy is the fastest dog in the dog park. She LOVES playing with other dogs and is very popular at the local dog parks as well as her dog sitters’, where she is often in a home with 5-10 other dogs. She’s a real dogs’ dog and loves to play. She comes to my Coworking space with me multiple days a week and happily sleeps under my desk all day long. If I leave her home while I’m at work, she curls up on the couch like a cat and barely moves. (I have the home cameras to prove it!)
She walks great on a leash and has several commands. She has proved herself to be a very trainable dog. She participated in a 3-week board and train program when she was 8 months old and learned fantastic foundational skills. She’s great offleash and is always the first dog to come back when called. Her recall is amazing. She learned how to use a doggie door this past year in our new house. So she comes and goes throughout the day as she needs, which is very helpful. She is also able to “hold it” for up to eight or nine hours a day. I have a 6-foot fence in the backyard and there is no fear of her jumping it (she’s part husky but doesn’t have that escapism behavior that some huskies show).
So why on earth would I need to rehome her? Leroy’s one flaw is that she is doesn’t do well with children. I used to think it was just toddlers but I’ve come to realize small people in general make her uncomfortable (I’ve seen her nervous behaviors around kids up to 9). I have been able to “contain” it for 3.5 years by staying vigilant and using our “stay” commands. Unfortunately, this past year has been more difficult. I gave birth to my first child in September 2022 and while Leroy is wonderful and gentle with my baby 9 times out of 10, she has started to show some anxious aggression toward my daughter. She has growled at my crawling toddler and nipped in her direction on a few occasions. While Leroy has never put her mouth on the baby, it’s not a situation I feel like I can experiment with. And I don’t want to further stress Leroy out.
I love Leroy deeply. She has been the most wonderful companion through the Pandemic. I can’t imagine my house without her. But I also can’t in good conscience keep her in a stressful environment that may turn unintentionally dangerous for my kid.
What kind of home would be best for Leroy?
- A home with no children
- A home with a backyard (she loves chasing squirrels!)
- a home with another dog would be amazing for her! I always thought about getting her a second dog because she’s so social
- A home with adults who are active and love to hike, go for runs, or will let her run laps in the dog park on a daily basis. She’s her best self when she gets exercise.
- A home with confident owners / adults who will be consistent with her commands and make sure she gets exercise.
In an ideal world, I think Leroy would thrive in the “country”. I have brought her to my parents home in rural New York and she loves to run freely in the woods. She has such good recall that there is no fear in her running away. She just loves to run and chase things.
When we find the right home for Leroy, she’ll come with all of her existing belongings.
I want to find Leroy a loving family who will treat her well. It would be amazing if the family would allow me to stay in some limited contact. I am having a very hard time with this and don’t want to abandon Leroy.
Please contact me at: puppies.pottery@gmail.com if you’re interested in meeting Leroy and seeing if she might be a good fit for your family.

dog

Name: Poppy
Age: 3
Location: Denver
Vaccinations: all up to date!
Spayed/neutered/chipped: yes
Breed: Doberman, Mastiff, Black Lab mix

Meet Poppy, she is loyal, loving and protective of her tribe. Poppy is a 3-year-old (Birthdate approx. 1/1/2020) female, Doberman, Mastiff, Black Lab mix (have a DNA test to share). She has been Spayed and is up to date on all her shots. Poppy is a happy, playful and very snuggly girl that loves to play catch, get her zoomies out and relax in a sunny spot. She is fully potty trained and has never been destructive when left home alone. We would not recommend a family with young children as she will get jealous about attention that is not on her. This also goes for other animals in the home. She does get along with other dogs/animals in a neutral space i.e. parks, etc., but does not want to share attention or protection duties with other animals in her home.

Want to add this sweet girl to your family? She is excited to meet you!

We look forward to meeting you!

dog

Please meet Kona! She is a 7 year old, 35 pound, mixed breed (cattledog, lab, misc), who joined our family when she was 10 months old. Since her arrival, we have welcomed two human babies into our household. Although she has tolerated their presence, she has always been pretty annoyed by them. Recently, our youngest (16 months old) slapped her in the face and then pulled both of her ears, while she was backed into a corner. She responded with a very quick bite with minimal impact; however because of this, we need to part ways.

Kona is a lover! She follows me around the house, sits outside the bathroom door, and sleeps in my bed every night. She always wants to be included and thinks she is a lap dog! Kona is very low maintenance (read: dry food, water, can stay home during the day, and loves running around in the backyard). She also loves car rides, camping, and still has a lot of energy.

A couple of other things to know about Kona: she has Chronic Rhinitis, which means she has a lot of “boogers” and reverse sneezes often. After a number of vet visits, there hasn’t been a successful remedy. They aren’t concerned, and we give her a Zyrtec when it gets bad. She is house/potty trained but gets very excited and jumps with new house visitors and could use some leash training for walks.

Kona is truly a great dog! She would do best with adults and teenage children. She has lived with and tolerated cats. We are unsure how she would do with another dog (she was attacked by a dog when she was 2-3 years old, and we have kept her away from dogs since that time). Please reach out via email (ambermoreyra@gmail.com) or phone (507-382-5588) to meet her.

(We can provide a collar, leash, and food/water bowls)
